They’re clearly two of the best football teams in the country and they are set for an epic clash on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. The University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the University of Georgia Bulldogs provided the college football world with an instant classic in last year’s National Championship game. What kind of fireworks and excitement can we expect when they compete for this year’s SEC crown? Only time will tell. Let’s take a look at both squads in anticipation of the event:
Alabama: Undefeated Yet Untested?
Some are calling it Nick Saban’s best Alabama squad ever, but no matter what you think of that declaration, there is no denying that this is an incredibly talented football team. The headliner for the 2018 Tide team has been Tua Tagovailoa and the Heisman worthy season numbers he has put up. Along with a cadre of talented receivers and backs, Tagovailoa and the Tide offense have mowed down the competition for the most part this year.
Lost in the glory heaped upon the Tide offense has been a defensive squad that may have started the season out at less than stellar status, but is hitting its stride at just the right time. Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams has been an absolute nightmare for opposing quarterbacks and Alabama’s formerly green secondary has solidified into a fearsome unit.
The question that begs to be asked at this point is whether or not this undefeated team has been truly tested. Odds are, we’ll get a definitive answer following the SEC Championship game on Saturday.
Georgia: Revenge on the Mind?
You’ve no doubt seen the play hundreds of times at this point. The ending of last year’s National Championship game was an absolute nightmare for the Georgia Bulldogs and they are most likely sick and tired of hearing about it. This year to date, Kirby Smart’s squad has turned in a spectacular season with only one somewhat head scratching loss to LSU on their record.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm has steadily led the ground and pound Georgia offense this year with the dynamic running back duo of D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield behind him. Don’t think for one second, however, that the Bulldogs don’t bite through the air, as well. Receivers Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley offer deep ball threats, and Hardman is especially a terror in open space.
UGA’s defense has been stout though perhaps slightly underachieving compared to last year’s incredible unit. Again, though, keep in mind that Georgia’s defense will be playing with a chip on its shoulder during the SEC Championship in light of last year’s disappointing finish in the National Title game.
