Veterans Day is always a big deal in Atlanta. The city is full of things to do, but the Atlanta Veterans Day Parade is the biggest and the best. The 37th Annual Atlanta Veterans Day Parade will roll out at 1111 hrs. on Nov. 10. That’s 11:11 a.m. for the uninitiated. The parade will depart Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta and will end at Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street. Drive up early so you can find a parking spot before the city closes off the streets at 8:30 a.m.
About the Parade
This parade is a huge celebration of the military and veterans. High schools, ROTC members, marching bands, veterans, and supporters participate in the parade, and there will be a Grand Marshal. This year, Colonel Danny R. McKnight will serve as the Grand Marshal. He is retired from the U.S. Army, where he was part of active duty combat in Panama in 1989 and Somalia in 1993. You likely know more about Somalia than you realize. It was covered in the book and movie “Black Hawk Down” and serves as an important part of military history.
Colonel McKnight didn’t just serve. He did so with honor, taking home numerous awards, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and the Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Star. This heavily decorated war hero will also serve as the Freedom Ball keynote speaker.

There are even awards for Best Veteran and Best Non-Veteran. The awards honor the parade’s standouts, and it is always fun to see who wins.
